Renaissance

The word Renaissance means ‘re-birth’ and is used in reference to a long period in the History of Art sparked by artists re-visiting and bringing back the Roman and Greek principles of perspective, proportion and life-like anatomy into their painting and sculpture.

Emerging in 14th Century Italy, it continued until the 17th century spreading throughout the whole of Europe and its territories with its humanist ideals influencing not only Art, Architecture and Literature but even Science and Politics.

Notable Artists of this period include Van Eyck, da Vinci, Botticelli, Caravaggio, Crivelli and Titian, who painted the accompanying portrait, to name but a very few.
